Mix of Pagan and Christian Ideas in Beowulf :: Epic of Beowulf Essay

The Mix of Pagan and Christian Ideas in Beowulf Beowulf was written in England around 1000 AD. This furnishes us with a thought of a sonnet that was composed during when the general public had changed over from agnosticism to christianity(Cohen 138). We realize that agnosticism existed close by Christianity during the estimated period that Beowulf was composed(Hall 61). The Christian impacts were joined with early old stories and gallant legends of sensational clans, early Beowulf researchers started to examine whether Christian and scriptural impacts were added later to initially agnostic influences(Hall 61). The Christian components are nearly regardless so profoundly instilled in the texture of the sonnet that they can't be clarified away as crafted by a reviser or later interpolator(Klaeber 2). The way that the two qualities are so firmly interweaved in the sonnet, I accept that is the explanation Beowulf has both Christian and agnostic impacts. The agnostic components in the epic sonnet Beowulf are apparent in the characters superhuman embodiments. Beowulf is portrayed as a hero. Beowulf willingly volunteers to spare the Danes from Grendel. In his fight with Grendel, Beowulf decides not to utilize weapons; he depends on his super quality. During the battle, Beowulf's quality dominates and Beowulf grapples with Grendel until he can tear one of the beast's arms out of its attachment. Superhuman accomplishments additionally show up in the battle with Grendel's mom. At the point when Beowulf enters the water, he swims descending for a whole day before he sees the base. He does this without the utilization of oxygen. During the fight with Grendel's mom, Beowulf understands that Unferth's blade is futile against the beasts toughness. He gets a huge blade made by mammoths, too overwhelming to even think about holding and cuts through the beast's body. This hero quality proceeds into the fight with the mythical beast. At this point , Beowulf is an elderly person. He confronts the mythical serpent and wounds him. Despite the fact that Beowulf is lethally injured himself, he despite everything figures out how to convey the last blow that executes the mythical beast. Grendel is likewise observed as a superhuman beast. Grendel has no information on weapons so he also relies upon his uncommon solidarity to wreck his foes. The monster is additionally observed as an excessively amazing enemy. As in most agnostic old stories, the monster is a much utilized adversary of the saint of the story(Greenfield 87).

Pecola-The Bluest I - Literature Essay Samples

Toni Morrisons Bluest Eye is a tragic narrative of how one black community loathes itself simply for not being white. Yet, even more tragic is the fact that an innocent little girl, Pecola, also comes to hate herself for not being white. She believes that only by having blue eyes can she actually be considered beautiful and that only by being beautiful can she be loved by those around her. Three critical factors, which drive Pecola to this delusional conclusion, are the media by which she is heavily surrounded, her family, and her community. Pecola, like her mother, bases her definitions of beauty heavily on the 1940s white media by which she is bombarded. She is described as gazing fondly at the silhouette of Shirley Temples dimpled face on a milk cup and admiring the visages of movie idols like Betty Grable and Hedy Lamarr (19).The media shape in Pauline and Pecola Breedlove the conviction that they could not possibly be beautiful because they were not white. They saw justification and confirmation of this notion leaning at them from every billboard, every movie, every glance (39). The people who are most able to influence Pecola-negatively or positively-are those closest to her: her family. As early as Pecolas birth, Pauline had considered her ugly and treats her as thus her whole life. Right after her daughters birth, Pauline observes, A right smart baby she was.But I knowed she was ugly. Head full of pretty hair, but Lord she was ugly (126). An instance which illustrates Paulines low regard for her daughter is when Pecola accidentally spills a blueberry cobbler, splashing some of the seething juice onto her legs: In one gallop, [Mrs. Breedlove] was on Pecola, and with the back of her hand knocked her to the floor. Pecola slid in the pie juice, one leg folding under her. Mrs. Breedlove yanked her up by the arm, slapped her again (109). Instead of being concerned for Pecolas wellbeing, Pauline both physically and verbally batters her daughter in front of a white girl for whose family she works. In stark, painful contrast, Pauline immediately changes her tone of voice upon seeing that the white girl is discomforted by the episode and soothes her, ironically, as a mother would, Hush, baby, hush. Come here. Oh Lord, look at your dress. Dont cry no more. Polly will change it' (109). Further evidence that Pecolas home is devoid of love is the fact that her brother Sammy is constantly running away, her father is always drunk, and her parents are incessantly arguing and fighting. Pecola tragically believes that, somehow, all the unhappiness in her family stems from her not being beautiful. Consequently, she desires to be invisible and to have pretty blue eyes, hoping that her family would stop doing bad things in the presence of these beautiful eyes (46). Pecolas community-everyone with whom she comes in contact outside her home-also affect her greatly. Various encounters with adults in the community cause Pecola to succumb even more hope lessly to the belief that she is ugly. One instance in which Pecola is subtly but visibly spurned by an adult white man is when she is buying some Mary Jane candy from the local grocer, Mr. Yacobowski; when she reaches over the counter to pay for her candy, He hesitates, not wanting to touch her hand. Finally he reaches over and takes the pennies from her hand. His nails graze her damp palm (49-50). On another occasion, when Geraldine comes home and hears that Pecola has killed her cat, she maliciously spits out, Get out, you nasty little black bitch. Get out of my house (92). Finally, even Soaphead Church, the man to whom Pecola has come to seek help, regards her as pitifully unattractive (173). One can only envision the pain Pecola must feel upon being utterly rejected by Mr. Yacobowski and then being called a black bitch by a woman who regards her as less than dirt, a woman who is herself black. School is yet another place where Pecola is shunned, rejected by peers and teachers al ike. Pecola perceives that [Her teachers] tried never to glance at her, and called on her only when everyone was required to respond, as if they were avoiding even noticing her presence in their classrooms (45-46). Pecolas troubles are not nearly over by the end of the school day; we see that she is harassed mercilessly on her way home by a gang of black boys who surround her and chant, Black e mo. Black e mo. Yadaddsleepnekked' (65). It is almost as if they are bringing attention to Pecolas black features in a deluded effort to reassure that they themselves are not ugly because they are not as black. The one friend Pecola makes at school is Maureen Peal, a well-to-do high-yellow girl who talks with her about movies and menstruating and even takes her out for ice cream. This friendship proves to be quite short-lived however. When insulted by Claudia for always acting cute, Maureen immediately turns on Claudia as well as her new friend Pecola, retaliating: I am cute! And you ugly! B lack and ugly e mos' (73). Thus, the various media cultivate in Pecolas mind the profound notion that being white is the one true beauty. Pecolas family, teachers, and peers then drive this notion even more deeply into her mind by unceasingly rebuking her for having black, and therefore ugly, features. All her life, Pecola seems to be a lonely little girl on an endless search for some kind of love, for some kind of positive attention from those around her. She eventually comes to the conclusion that having blue eyes would bring her both the love and attention for which she has longed all her life. Pecola finally does receive attention from her father: Cholly loved her.He, at any rate, was the one who loved her enough to touch her, envelop her, give something of himself to her (206). Although Chollys rape(s) of Pecola is wrong in all respects, Pecola herself could have perversely seen it as a form of his love for her. She reasons that, in order to actually receive love from som eone, she must have blue eyes. This, in turn, is probably what finally drives Pecola into insanity at the end of the book, believing she has blue eyes.

Eastern Tradition as Eliots Route to Salvation in The Wasteland - Literature Essay Samples

T.S Eliots The Waste Land begins with a latin epigraph that refers to the story of the prophetess to Apollo, Sibyl of Cumae. Apollo wanted to take the prophetess as his lover and offered her anything she wanted in return. Sibyl asked to live as long as there were grains in a handful of dust but still refused to be Apollos lover after he granted that wish. She soon realized that she had been granted eternal life and not eternal youth and to her dismay got older and, older as the world stayed young around her. The prophetess choosing eternal life on earth is symbolic of the western tradition of defining yourself through your earthly legacy. The first world war then destroys western culture and society and, turns it into the barren waste land that Eliot describes. The Latin epigraph in The Waste Land represents the deterioration of western culture because of its beliefs in a dead tradition. The poem shifts to an eastern tradition because of its values in truth, compassion and, ethical p ractice being the possible solution to healing western culture. The Wasteland begins with The Burial of the Dead, which symbolizes the death of a traditional western religion by presenting knowledge through the absence of a physical god and, in the void of a handful of dust. The first 19 lines depict a story of an aristocratic german woman recalling the nostalgia of her childhood in contrast to the, Dull roots with spring rain(4) that symbolize the fruitless state of her current life despite the regenerative rain of spring. April is the cruelest month to her because, a time that was once symbolic of the resurrection of Jesus and, the salvation of humanity, now symbolizes death and hopelessness. What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow/ Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,/ You cannot say, or guess, for you know only/ A heap of broken images(20-22) This speaker now questions western religion in itself and, raises doubt in believing in what we have been told is God but, have not experienced ourselves. The speaker is questioning what is to be gained through following this god we do not actually know of. I think they relate western religion to stony rubbish because, western religion offers the same illusion of solidity that a stone may but, offers nothing of actual substance. They then go on to say, I will show you fear in a handful of dust.(30) This relates directly to the latin epigraph of Sibyl and her void of a meaningless long life. Western tradition ends in a feeling of void, despite what you have acquired, because of its beliefs in meaninglessness. Eliot ends this hopeless western epic with an offer of a solution through an alternative understanding in values. This solution comes in, a flash of lightning. Then a damp gust/ Bringing rain.(394-5) This rain comes as a relief to the barren wasteland and in the next lines we are taken to the shores of the improvised Ganga, where its limp leafs finally feel rain too. The speaker then expresses the three duties and values of Eastern Hindu tradition: Datta, Dayadhyam and, Damyata. Datta, in Hindu means give and the speaker asks us what we have given and in reflection of the poem we realize that we have only given destruction in return of the dead culture we live in. This was illustrated perfectly in the first section of the poem, That corpse you planted last year in your garden/ Has it begun to sprout? Or has the sudden frost disturbed its bed?(70-72) I thought this symbolized the unnecessary death cause by the war and how victory, a feeling of accomplishment and warmth, was replaced w ith the cold feeling of death and loss. We are given the last two duties of Hinduism; Dayadhyam and, Damyata which mean compassion and self-control. They both lead to the peace that passes understanding or Shantih which the poem ends with. The western tradition offers no values of compassion or self-control and instead promotes a key to salvation view of faith, I have heard the key/ Turn in the door once and turn once only/ We think of the key, each in his prison/ Thinking of the key(412-14) Everyone is striving to do what they believe is best by god to gain the key to salvation but, their prayers ring on dead ears, leaving them in a prison of their own closed mind. Eastern tradition promotes giving, compassion and, self-control because it believes that everyone is one with each other and therefore, should share and help in each others struggles. This is a concept alien to a western tradition that values gain through destruction or even Utilitarianism. This is the same concept Eliot wanted the reader to take away from the introduction of Hindu verse towards the end of a hopeless poem. At the end of A Fire Sermon there are chants in western tradition and eastern tradition. Western traditions dependency on god for salvation is shown, O Lord Thou pluckest me out/ O Lord Thou pluckest,(309-10) and garners no response while eastern tradition basks in the purifying fire as from a sermon by Buddha about nirvana. Eliot does not want every reader to suddenly convert to a eastern tradition but, for every reader to include these concepts in their bag of broken images as a hope of gaining understanding to achieve Shantih. The poem finishes with the image of the Fisher king experiencing peace through the three duties of Hinduism. There is no certain answer but the reader is told the kind is setting his lands in order which can be taken as a metaphor of his life. He tells the reader, These fragments I have shored against my ruins/ Why they [might]Ile fit you.(431-2) Here does he tell the reader that he has found value in the duties and that they might be our solution to? Theres a fleck of doubt on this solution with the quick elude to Hieronymo, which through its story symbolizes that the deepest truth will ring silent in the worlds ear (western society) because it rejects those values. Though this does not leave the play hopeless because Hieronymo still strove to revive his tradition, despite the worlds view, because it was still truth. The first four sections of a poem are symbolic of western traditions death through foundations in an empty faith. The reader is shown and reminded that our self-motivated wars have destroyed the god we believe in. Eliot offers us an alternative way of understanding and, chooses Eastern traditional values because the self-salvation value held so highly in western tradition is what killed it. Eastern religions of Buddhism and Hinduism both stress: On giving back, having compassion for others and, self-control as the only way to salvation. This is important because although the bottom line is still self salvation, your salvation is derived through actively contributing to your environment and instead of following another persons path, we create our own, which in turn gives us the meaning we are searching for in our void of a handful of dust. The Political Orientation And Participation Of Individuals...

The ‘big five’ is a model that has been used to identify personality traits the have a reflection in the political orientation and participation of individuals. In this essay I will be arguing that the personality of individuals has less of an impact on their political behaviour than other factors including age, gender and socioeconomic status. Research in relation to the big five has shown that there are two areas of the ‘big five’ that have more influence than others, I will be discussing why scoring higher on the openness section of the big five may mean that you are more likely to be a supporter who is more liberal or on the left of the political spectrum. Contrasting this if you score higher on the conscientiousness scale you are more likely to be right wing or conservative on the political spectrum. The big five does not necessarily identify if a person is more likely to vote or not, just solely orientation so this essay will discuss factors that can c hange the probability of participation in politics. Civil Rights Cases During The 20th Century - 3051 Words

Social Problem Olmstead vs. L.C., which is the case that led to the Olmstead Decision, is considered to be one of the most important civil rights cases during the 20th century (Zubritsky, Mullahy, Allen, Alfano, 2006). The Olmstead Decision was put into place after two women with a diagnosis of mental illness and developmental disability were voluntarily placed in a psychiatric facility and remained institutionalized for years. Even after efforts made by the women’s staff members to move them into a community setting, they were not moved until the Supreme Court’s 1999 decision in the Olmstead case (Cashmore, 2014). Individuals with disabilities have a history of being isolated from the rest of society, a form of segregation that presents a major social problem. The Olmstead Decision defines segregation as settings that provide activities solely for people with disabilities, settings populated primarily by individuals who have a disability, and settings that have po licies that hold back individuals with disabilities from engaging in community activities (U.S. Department of Justice). Containing individuals in an institution when they have the ability to live in the community, places severe restrictions on an individual’s ability to interact with the community. When individuals who could benefit from a community placement remain institutionalized, it causes a false perception that all people in institutions are unable to function in a community setting. Malcolm X And Mia Mckenzie - 1035 Words

For years problems in society and ethics have existed in America, among these problems, many great thinkers have emerged, but two of the most influential of this century are Malcolm X and Mia McKenzie. Malcolm X was one of many civil rights leaders during the 1960’s, who alongside Martin Luther King Jr. was able to bring an end to the segregation laws of the United States. Mia McKenzie is an African American writer who has written countless books, and addresses the issues of racism, queerness, class, and gender in the modern decade. Both of these extravagant leaders are advocates for rights among less represented groups in society, and share many similarities and differences through their ideas and politics. However there are three†¦show more content†¦With a time period of unjust treatment of people of color, and a childhood filled with trauma from inequality, it is easy to see that Malcolm X’s time and place he resided in having a great influence to his belie fs and ideas. Not only had Malcolm X been greatly influenced by the time period he lived in, but also living in Harlem, New York brought him closer to the people who endured all of the nauseous history of racial inequality. Mia McKenzie was also influenced by time and place, as she too grew up in a time of American history of Anti-gay and Anti-sexual orientation. Mia grew up in Philadelphia, and why not subjected to segregation, she was highly exposed to racism. In her book Black Girl Dangerous she speaks of the hardships and struggles she has undergone as a queer person of color such as †¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.. With these problems still prevalent in modern society, it is clear that the time period and place she lives in have attributed to her ideas and beliefs. Her childhood of bullies and racial slurs adds on to her influence of beliefs. Mia McKenzie also fights the new version of segregation which is a sexual orientation, giving her the same values and credibility to speak on the subject as Malcolm x has in racial inequality. Together both of these critical thinkers share a common influence of time and place even though they are over fifty years apart. The first way Mia McKenzie and Malcolm X are similar is the influence of mass culture.

Shedding light on the shenanigans Aussies get up to, research conducted by Southern Cross Travel Insurance shows 39 per cent of travellers took their tastebuds for a whirl, munching on bugs and insects, while over a third got their adrenalin pumping with cliff jumping, river tubing and bungy jumping. Other wildcard behaviour included skipping the sun lounger for stripclubs, gambling, and late night swims. From the House of Yemanja, by Audre Lorde and Girl, by Jamaica Kincaid Essay Example For Students

From the House of Yemanja, by Audre Lorde and Girl, by Jamaica Kincaid Essay There are many issues that could be brought up and discussed when asked this question. However, only a few important issues come to mind. For instance, with adulthood come many new responsibilities. Furthermore, many will be initiating college, while others may be starting families, beginning new jobs, or simply going through tribulations. When we consider works such as From the House of Yemanja, by Audre Lorde and Girl, by Jamaica Kincaid, it is clear that writers not only write about general concerns, but also about what affects them directly as they grow up. For example, Audre Lorde s short poem From the House of Yemanja, showcases a daughter who needs her mother s help in a desperate time of need. However, her mother is not around to help relieve her pain. She has no brothers to turn too and she doesn t get along with any of her sisters. It is sad to think about, but there are many families that deal with this sort of problem day in and day out. Adulthood is a major step in every one s life and it is important to remember that having someone to talk to is very important. The short story Girl, by Jamaica Kincaid is another work that describes the roubles with becoming an adult. Throughout the story, a young lady sits and listens to her mother babble on and on about everything. The mother is so concerned about her daughter that whenever the young lady tries to make a comment or answer her mother s Beard 1 questions, her mother simply ignores her. For instance, is it true that you sing benna in Sunday school? always eat your food in such a way that it won t turn someone else s stomach; on Sundays try to walk like a lady and not the slut you are so bent on becoming; on t sing benna in Sunday school; you mustn t speak to wharf-rat boys, not even to give directions; don t eat fruits on the street-flies will follow you; but I don t sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school (Literature and Society 72). Parents often ignore their kids when they are lecturing them because they want to prove their points without being interrupted. Another reason is because they won t be able to relate or connect to anything their child says. However, it s very important that parents either get help or learn to deal with problems such as these. If they don t their child may rebel, which can often lead to additional problems in the future. Besides dealing with parents young adults must decide whether to begin college or go directly to work after high school. Those who choose to work tend to start families earlier than those who go to college. These people not only have to fulfill the role of being a good parent, they must provide food on the table and clothes for their children. This takes a lot of hard word and dedication. This may be the hardest part of one s life, ut it is well worth it in the long run. Although some may choose to work and start a family, many go to college as well. An increasing number of people are selecting this route because college has become more affordable due to financial aid and student loans. It all up to the individual to get the best education he or she can get. The more effort one puts in, the better the education will be. One can make college easy or hard. It all depends on what you put into it and how well you manage your time. .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 , .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 .postImageUrl , .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 , .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49:hover , .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49:visited , .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49:active { border:0!important; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49:active , .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49 .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc96f63a650f663e5cf1c7bd59cfdfb49:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Recovering latent parts of a story: The Buck EssayMany people will be finding new friends to hang out with. On December 10, 1986 the Greater New York Section Essay Example For Students

On December 10, 1986 the Greater New York Section Essay of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the engineering section of the New York Academy of Sciences jointly presented a program on mining the planets. Speakers were Greg Maryniak of the Space Studies Institute (SSI) and Dr. Carl Peterson of the Mining and Excavation Research Institute of M.I.T. Maryniak spoke first and began by commenting that the quintessential predicament of space flight is that everything launched from Earth must be accelerated to orbital velocity. Related to this is that the traditional way to create things in space has been to manufacture them on Earth and then launch them into orbit aboard large rockets. The difficulty with this approach is the huge cost-per-pound of boosting anything out of this planets gravity well. Furthermore, Maryniak noted, since (at least in the near to medium term) the space program must depend upon the government for most of its funding, for this economic drawback necessarily translates into a political pro blem. Maryniak continued by noting that the early settlers in North America did not attempt to transport across the Atlantic everything then needed to sustain them in the New World. Rather they brought their tools with them and constructed their habitats from local materials. Hence, he suggested that the solution to the dilemma to which he referred required not so much a shift in technology as a shift in thinking. Space, he argued, should be considered not as a vacuum, totally devoid of everything. Rather, it should be regarded as an ocean, that is, a hostile environment but one having resources. Among the resources of space, he suggested, are readily available solar power and potential surface mines on the Moon and later other celestial bodies as well. The Moon, Maryniak stated, contains many useful materials. Moreover, it is twenty-two times easier to accelerate a payload to lunar escape velocity than it is to accelerate the identical mass out of the EarthUs gravity well. As a pra ctical matter the advantage in terms of the energy required is even greater because of the absence of a lunar atmosphere. Among other things this permits the use of devices such as electromagnetic accelerators (mass drivers) to launch payloads from the MoonUs surface. Even raw Lunar soil is useful as shielding for space stations and other space habitats. At present, he noted, exposure to radiation will prevent anyone for spending a total of more than six months out of his or her entire lifetime on the space station. At the other end of the scale, Lunar soil can be processed into its constituent materials. In between steps are also of great interest. For example, the MoonUs soil is rich in oxygen, which makes up most of the mass of water and rocket propellant. This oxygen could be RcookedS out of the Lunar soil. Since most of the mass of the equipment which would be necessary to accomplish this would consist of relatively low technology hardware, Maryniak suggested the possibility th at at least in the longer term the extraction plant itself could be manufactured largely on the Moon. Another possibility currently being examined is the manufacture of glass from Lunar soil and using it as construction material. The techniques involved, according to Maryniak, are crude but effective. (In answer to a question posed by a member of the audience after the formal presentation, Maryniak stated that he believed the brittle properties of glass could be overcome by using glass-glass composites. He also suggested yet another possibility, that of using Lunar soil as a basis of concrete.) One possible application of such Moon-made glass would be in glass-glass composite beams. Among other things, these could be employed as structural elements in a solar power satellite (SPS). While interest in the SPS has waned in this country, at least temporarily, it is a major focus of attention in the U.S.S. R. , Western Europe and Japan. In particular, the Soviets have stated that they wi ll build an SPS by the year 2000 (although they plan on using Earth launched materials. Similarly the Japanese are conducting SPS related sounding rocket tests. SSI studies have suggested that more than 90%, and perhaps as much .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 , .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 .postImageUrl , .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 , .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6:hover , .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6:visited , .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6:active { border:0!important; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6:active , .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6 .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u63271bde4c465bff5c6b18c57664b1c6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Marxist Theorys On Economic Development Essay

John Quincy Adams Essays (876 words) - Adams Family,

John Quincy Adams Hello, I'm John Quincy Adams. I grew up in Braintree, Massachusetts, and when I became an adult I traveled with my father on his diplomatic missions until I became interested in political journalism at Harvard and eventually became he sixth president of the United States. During my lifetime, from 1767 to 1848, the United States was desperately trying to make allies, as the country was in it's infancy. I followed my father's footsteps, as I was working in foreign relations before I became President. I have experienced many great events, such as when I was appointed as minister to the Netherlands, a mere three days later I witnessed the French invade the country and overthrow the Dutch Republic. This was thought of by many as an attempt for the French to show the United States how strong it was, without exerting any force on them at all. On a different occasion, when I was appointed minister to Russia, I was the leading negotiator for the Treaty of Ghent with the British, which ended t he War of 1812. These negotiations gained respect for the United States and me as a diplomat. I am a likable person wherever I go. When I was a kid, our family was very closely knit, as we all helped manage the farm, except for my dad, who was usually away in foreign countries. This didn't affect me very much since I joined up with him when I was 11 on his operations after my persistent asking. As President, I worked scrupulously to work out problems and provide leadership for the country. This was acknowledged by my fellow officials in office and by the country, as I'm thought of as a person with integrity and honesty. Louisa Catherine Adams, my wife, holds a special place in my heart. She has always been trustworthy and nice. As a child she had to deal with ill health frequently, (which often recurs), and as First Lady she held brilliant parties for my Cabinet and friends. Louisa and I had four children, but sadly they all died before they could have children of their own, all for various reasons. My only real enemy to speak of is Andrew Jackson. Before my administration, Jackson and his followers accused me of promising Henry Clay a cabinet post in return for his support. After I was elected, and I appointed Clay Secretary of State, Jackson's strong followers in Congress called it a 'corrupt bargain'. This dispute forever split the Democratic-Republican Party, and mine is now known as the National Republicans. Throughout my life in politics, I was just concerned with providing the country with leadership to the best of my ability. I realized all my actions would influence everyone after me, so it wasn't just my administration I was providing for. I'm very fortunate to have a father like I did. I didn't have very many obstacles to overcome on my way into the White House, since my father really led me into position, right up to his support for me as President, which influenced even more people to vote for me. I consider the split of the parties an obstacle to overcome since if it weren't for the intense campaigning afterward, I probably wouldn't have been elected since I lost much support from that event. Nothing is really funny in my life since I am often saddened by my wife's frequent illnesses and charges from Jackson. Throughout my life in politics, it has usually just been being a different minister for a different country before settling in the White House. I have often been misunderstood, due to the fact of my philosophy to change things for the better, which the people of this country aren't always ready for. For instance, at my inaugural speech in front of Congress, I proposed a plan for national improvements, such as highways, universities, and weather stations. They didn't buy into it, but I have a feeling they will realize one day that it needs to be done, but it's a shame not I don't think they will in my lifetime. If I had my life to do over again, I would probably not have appointed Henry

The Euro Zones Rising Inflation and Unemployment Rate

The Euro Zones Rising Inflation and Unemployment Rate The euro zone had been a region of envy in economic regards to many regions since its formation. However, the euro zone found itself in a predicament from late 2009 after the economic downturns that faced some countries in the euro zone.Advertising We will write a custom assessment sample on The Euro Zone’s Rising Inflation and Unemployment Rate specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Many euro zone countries piled up their debts to the extent that they were unable to service them. This was worsened by the fact that despite countries in the euro zone use of one currency they have different tax structures as well as regulations. As a result, leaders of various countries found it difficult to interfere with affairs of other countries even when it was iminent that they could affect their performance. Consequently, countries in the euro zone were plunged into deep economic problems that seem to be worsening. To begin with, the unemploymen t rate has been increasing since the crisis begun due to worsening economic conditions. However, the rate reached a record high of 10.7 percent in January since the formation of the euro zone in 1999. There are approximately 24.3 million people out of jobs in the entire euro zone. The number might be more given the fact that some people are unrecorded. According to Keynesian economics, inflation rate and unemployment are inversely related in the sense that when one rises the other should decline. However, this has not worked in the euro zone. Despite the increasing rate of unemployment, inflation rate has also been increasing. The average rate of inflation in January was 2.7 percent. Though this has been attributed to the increasing world energy prices, the economic crisis has a role to play. It should also be noted that though the European central bank has been keen on maintaining the inflation rate below 2 percent, it has not succeeded. Increase in the money supply is known to end in high inflation rates though it is crucial in jump starting a stagnating economy. The debt crisis of the euro zone can be alleviated by increasing the accessibility of money which is what the European central bank wants to achieve through its low interest loans.Advertising Looking for assessment on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More On the same note, various major banks are also printing money thus increasing the money supply. This, however, has increased the expectations that inflation rate will increase in future thus increasing the tendencies that inflation will raise in the near future. This can also have dire effects on interest rates as well as the exchange rates. Nevertheless, it is sad to note that expansionary monetary policy seems to be the only feasible solution. It is important to note that though collectively the euro zone countries have experienced increasing deteriorating economic conditions, some countries are worse than others. Spain for example performed poorly with unemployment rate hitting 23.3 percent in November compared to Germany where the unemployment rate was 6.8 percent in February. Greece is also among the countries that have suffered serious effects as far as the euro zone crisis is concerned. However, analysts have envisioned good times ahead though they are cautioning that it is not yet celebration time. Reports have showed that the manufacturing sector has recorded slight positive statistics. However, specialists say that the change is too small and the industry is still below par. On the same note, the euro crisis is not likely to end any time soon given the extent of its effect on some countries for example Greece. It will be however be improper to say that the economic region will collapse since it is slowly picking up.

Report on Recommendations for changes the financial portfolio in Essay

Report on Recommendations for changes the financial portfolio in response to various scenarios in Cheep Petrol (CP- the company is not real) plc (UK) - Essay Example ble to demonstrate an excellent command of sophisticated energy derivative transactions while it strives to respond to the diverse energy risk management needs of its customers. Abstract: Developing a framework for analyzing the investment allocation and investment structure decisions facing institutions. Our model should incorporate two key features: i) value-maximizing institutions should have a well-founded concern with risk management; and ii) not all the risks they face can be hedged frictionless in the capital market. This approach allows us to show how institutional-level risk management considerations should factor into the pricing of those risks that cannot be easily hedged. Several applications should be examined, including: the evaluation of proprietary trading operations; and the pricing of unhedgeable derivatives portfolios. One of the fundamental roles of investments of the companies and other financial intermediaries is to invest in illiquid financial assets--assets that, because of their information-intensive nature, cannot be traded frictionless in the capital markets. The standard example of such an illiquid asset is to have a bond portfolio. Below were given developed diversified portfolios with varying risk/return profiles from conservative to aggressive. They are designed to help you choose a real-world portfolio suited to your investment goals, time horizon, and risk profile. Asset allocation is the process of distributing wealth among different investment types, most typically stocks, bonds, and cash. Asset allocation attempts to increase potential return and reduce risk in portfolios over time. Research has shown asset allocation decisions are the most important factor affecting overall portfolio performance. While this process can be performed on any portfolio with two or more assets, it is most commonly applied to the asset classes mentioned above—stocks, bonds, and cash. Studies between 1991 and 1995 demonstrated that allocation

Reflection paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 45

Reflection paper - Essay Example According to the recommendation 4 of the health reforms, it is desired that by 2020, the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to have increased to 80 percent (Institute of Medicine) (2011). This is a 30 percent increase from 2010’s 50 percent. In addition to the attainment of the baccalaureate degree, the recommendation is also concerned with the diversity of those who attain it (Ibid 2011). IOM (Institute of Medicine) (2011) the essence of diversity of the nurses with the baccalaureate degree holders is to cater for the diverse population’s demands. Increasing my level of education will affect how I compete in the current job market in profoundly beneficial ways. Strong evidence has established a desirable â€Å"relationship between higher education for nurses and improved patient outcomes† (Ibid 2011). With regard to the requirements for entry-level practice, the expectations from the general public are that more people interested in nursing will pu rsue the baccalaureate degree (Ibid 2011). Therefore, settling down with a baccalaureate degree will not offer me a competitive advantage. In the business world, employers are being hired with preference to those with BSN and Higher degrees (Ibid 2011). My goal is to pursue a doctorate in nursing since unlike the baccalaureate degree this gives me the competitive advantage that I need in the current job market. Institute of Medicine (2011) recommendation 5 pursues that by 2020, the number of nurses with a doctorate to have doubled. The multiplication of the current number of nurses is also closely associated with the catering for the diverse populations’ demands. Moreover, an increase in the number of nurses with a doctorate will contribute to the researcher of the nursing faculties. Pursuing a nursing course so far has opened up my mind to heightened interests in the field. Increasing my level of education is expected to substantially affect my role in

School Life Essay Example for Free

School Life Essay It’s a normal day 6:30 in the morning just as any other. Then BOOM my alarm clock goes off to wake my brother and I up to get ready for school, but this was all put to the side by our mother coming in to the room telling us that she would have to work a few extra hours. Wake your but up! Is what I yelled to my brother as I had always did he consistently showed himself to be the lazy one who would just breeze through life without a care in the world. He replied back with the bad morning breath, â€Å"Leave, me, alone its only 6:30 school doesn’t start until 7:30. † Me as usual I got up pulled him out of bed until he hit the floor then started my routine to get ready for the day’s events. Oh yeah my name is Gerard by the way. I carried myself across the dimly lit hall towards the bathroom. As I flicked on the light switch, I first noticed this hair pick still stuck in the side of my head. I immediately grabbed it and started to fix my hair. As I stand in front of the mirror looking back at my own reflection, wondering why, does school start this early in the morning, I grabbed the toothbrush and toothpaste and began to a make it happen. My brother’s name is Joel, and he could care less of his appearance, because he always thought that he was God’s gift to the ladies. Most of his attire consisted of whatever he felt like grabbing out of the closet or the first thing he could get his hands on. He didn’t care if he was all wrinkled, his excuse was that they’ll be gone throughout the day plus now one would notice them anyway because that’s how he rolled. You would have thought that he just came from summer camp playing rugby with a few of his friends before school started. As he came into the bathroom besides me to wash up and get ready, I could always here him saying thanks for getting me up too, knowing that being the older sibling I couldn’t just let him be late for school besides our mother would have killed me. As I look at the clock I notice that we are right on schedule, its 7:00 and time to wake my sister Latoya, she’s in middle school and does not experience the rush that my brother and I go thru being that the two of us share a room and sometimes wrestle to get around to what we need to be done. The time is now 7:10, and it’s time for us to leave the house headed for school since we live only a quarter of a mile away from the school we can pretty much toss a couple of rocks a few times and we’re there. The only downside is that sometimes we get too complacent living so close to the school that we end up thinking there’s more time and end up cutting it close to getting to class on time or worse being late and end up with detention. As we get to school they are still selling breakfast its usually something simple like garlic cheesy bread or the cinnamon sugar rolls that are so delicious. But we cannot stand in line and enjoy them today because the first school bell rings and that signifies things need to get closed out and you need to put your thinking caps on. As we exited the cafeteria it was 7:25 and the start of the school day and the final bell rings at 1:50. Joel and I always knew that we would see each other at our lunch period odd as it seems I was a senior and he was a sophomore, but hey, that’s how the schedules came out. We couldn’t control the outcomes of what we wanted to do we could always find some sort of time to throw a wise crack at one another.

The Depiction of Corruption in the Beatyful Ones Are Not...

Corruption is one of the major themes in the post colonial literature in Africa. In the Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, this theme covers the entire book though not clearly stated. The author decided to use the symbols of filthy and rot to represent it. He gives advice to the people of Ghana and other nations about the causes and effects of corruption; he chose to use a special technique of hiding the names of the characters so that he does not conflict with government of the time. This essay therefore will look at the following characters the Bus driver, the conductor, the man, the teacher, the sleep seller, the shitman, the visitor and the allocation clerk. It will further show the significance of the names of characters in relation†¦show more content†¦This is clearly shown on (page 2), â€Å"The walkers sleep still, but their nightmares in which they are dwarfs unable to run away and little insects caught in endless pools, these fearful dreams are gone†. Trul y people were still only bodies walking in their sleep. Despite their hard work, creativity and good dreams corruption has destroyed them, hence they move without hope for the future and it’s only the corrupt that do less work that enjoy life on expense of the poor citizen. The decadence and corruption that surrounds the society of Ghana is not confirmed to government officials alone, since the leaders are examples, society accepts their rotten ways. In support of the above statement, Ayttey (2002:15) observes, â€Å"There is no doubt that corruption inflicts some sorts of adverse effects on any society where it exists and persists until such society is purged off its immorality.† Shit man is another character is identified by his Occupation who symbolizes good morals and hard work. He carries waste products for a living. Despite doing having a demoralizing and degrading job, he has dignity. He shows that the Beautyful ones have the responsibility to remove the filth and rot from Ghana. This shows that there people in society who are willing to fight corruption but there unable to achieve their objective due to their
